Inspections

The inspections department is responsible for assuring sewer laterals are installed  properly with new residential & commercial construction projects. Inspections also makes sure older laterals are running smoothly by supervising Ordinance Tests. Finally, inspectors mark USAs for digging projects.

New Residential Construction Inspections

New homes and commercial property construction start with groundwork which include trenches that house sewer laterals.  TSD inspectors perform inspections to make sure everything is installed properly and running smoothly.  There are various stages of inspection performed with new construction. New Commercial Construction Inspections

Commercial projects include The Railyard Project, Raley's, Coldstream and more. These projects are larger scale projects that require a keen eye for inspecting all new sewer laterals and manholes that are installed.  TSD prides itself on keeping Truckee clean and free of sewer spills. the photo on the left shows the new lateral and manhole under The Railyard Project. The Importance of Backwater Valves

A backwater valve is an attachment to sewer laterals that prevents wastewater from backing up into homes and structures in the event of a blockage.  In section 710.1 of the Plumbing Code states, "Where a fixture is installed on a floor level that is lower than the next upstream manhole cover of the public or private sewer, serving such drainage piping, shall be protected from backflow of sewage by installing an approved type of backwater valve". Ordinance Testing

An ordinance test is done on existing sewer laterals.  An ordinance test can be performed in various ways with either Air, Smoke, Water or TVing.  TSD inspectors supervise the tests to assure the are completed correctly. Ordinance tests are to be done before a new lateral can pass final inspection and sometimes before a house can be sold. The photo on the left shows an example of smoke testing at a residential property. See Section 10, Maintenance of Existing Facilities in the TSD Code for more information. USA Marking

USAs or Underground Service Alerts are done when a digging project is planned. Whether it is a homeowner planning a landscape project or a commercial construction project, USAs are asked to be phoned in. A USA is a notice that is sent out to all local utilities that a person plans on a digging project.  USAs are very important, because utilities have pipes and lines underground. Gas lines, electric lines, water lines and sewer lines all can be under where you plan to dig. To avoid hitting or breaking any of these lines and causing catastrophic damage utilities mark on the ground where their lines are located below the surface.  If you have a digging project coming up, please notify USA North 72 hours before the start of the project. click Learn More for more information.  Click Learn More to go to the USA website.
