Lift Stations

A lift station moves wastewater from a lower elevation to a higher elevation when gravity is not an option.  Gravity pipelines make up approximately 400 miles of TSD service area. When gravity cannot be used to move wastewater through the sewer laterals, lift stations are needed.  TSD has 13 main lift stations and 31 smaller lift stations, 6 of which can be found around Donner Lake (see Figure 1).

Video 1 briefly explains how a lift station works.

In Alder Creek, you may see a large pump station (Figure 2) at the Alder Creek Campground.  This pump station serves the same purpose as the lift stations seen around Donner Lake and around the District.

Some lift/pump stations are pretty inconspicuous. Like ones you would see in Lahontan (Figure 3), you may not even know the structure you see is working hard to move wastewater through TSD sewer laterals.
